Most guides on WeChat Pay make it sound complicated. It's not — but there are a few things that will trip you up if you don't know about them in advance.
Call your bank. This is the step everyone skips and then regrets. Tell them you're traveling to China and will be using WeChat Pay — ask them to whitelist transactions from Chinese payment processors. Banks flag these as suspicious and block them automatically. Do this before you board the plane, not while you're standing at a checkout counter with a line forming behind you.
Make sure your phone can receive international SMS. Download "WeChat" — the international version. Don't download "Weixin," which is the domestic Chinese version with more registration restrictions.
WeChat Pay requires identity verification before you can pay for anything. Foreign nationals can use a passport — go to Me → Services → Wallet → Bank Cards → Add Bank Card, then select "Non-mainland China ID" and follow the prompts.
Your name must match your passport exactly, including any middle names. Upload your passport photo page somewhere with good lighting and no glare. Face verification works best when you're somewhere well-lit, facing the camera directly, without a hat or sunglasses.
Visa, Mastercard, JCB and Discover all work — both credit and debit cards. Prepaid cards and virtual cards don't. One setting people miss: go to Me → Pay → Payment Management → Overseas Payment and make sure it's switched on.
Payments under 200 RMB are free. Above that, there's a 3% fee. The exchange rate comes from your card network, not WeChat.
